The 501 Experience

Swim beneath a 150-foot granite waterfall in the Mountain Pine Ridge.

The road climbs out of the lowlands into the Mountain Pine Ridge and the whole country changes around you. Pines replace palms, the air cools, and the granite underfoot is some of the oldest rock in Central America. You hear the falls well before you see them.

A stepped trail drops you at the base, where the Privassion River comes off a granite shelf about 150 feet into a deep emerald pool. The water is cold, clear, and made for swimming, and the pool is wide enough to float on your back and watch the whole thing come down. Almost every group stays longer than they planned to.

Big Rock Falls sits in the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve in the Cayo District, where the Privassion River pours off a granite ledge into one of the most photographed swimming holes in Belize. It is a full day from San Pedro and worth every minute of it, and 501 arranges the ferry or flight, the drive up into the reserve, and the guide.

Good to know

Mountain water runs colder than anything on the caye. The Lazy Pelican is very good at warming people back up.

Mainland days run subject to weather and road conditions. Your guides will always pick the best day to go, and 501 handles every leg of the trip from your hotel door and back. Hotel guests get first priority on scheduling.
